The Master Rally is run in August and begins in Paris, France. It

The
Rally Orientale 2008
Organizing
a Rally across Russia, Kazakhstan and China, René Metge was
dreaming about it. It is now a reality who will start on June 12,
2008 in Saint-Pétersburg, to end in Beijing on June 28. Pairing
with Gilles Martineau and with the help of IEC In Sports and Sportfive,
the former Dakar and Le Mans winner made his mission a success and
this exceptional Rally is now for real.
The
Dakar Rally
The Paris to Dakar is probably the world's largest Off-Road race.
It takes place ever year, starting on January 1st in Paris and then
working its way through North Africa to Dakar over the course of
a little more than two weeks. There are many different classes to
include motorcycles, cars, buggies and large trucks.
The
Dakar is organised by TSO (Thierry Sabine Organisation, named after
Thierry Sabine, father of the Dakar, who was killed in a helicopter
crash during the 1986 race).
Furthermore the increasing importance of the raid rallies is documented
in the fact, that in 1995 the International Motorsports Authority
(FIA) announced them as official world championships.
1995

The
five cars that actually started the 1907 race were: |
The
40hp, four cylinders Itala, driven by Prince Borghese, with Ettore
Guizzardi as mechanic and journalist Luigi Barzini as passenger. Its
laden weight without crew was 2000kg. |
|
|

The
Itala stripped on its load and bodywork on the Italian embassy in
Peking .On the wheel: Ettore Guizzardi. |
|
The
15hp four-cylinder Spyker, driven by Charles Goddard, with Jean du
Taillis as passenger. Its laden weight was 1400kg. |
|
|
Goddard
at the wheel of the second-placed Spyker, just outside Moscow. Like
the Itala, the Dutch-built Spyker survives today and can be viewed
in a Museum in Amsterdam. |
|
The
10hp, 2-cylinder de Dion-Bouton, driven by Georges Cormier, with Edgardo
Longono as passenger. Its laden weight was 1400kg. |
|
|
The
second of the two de Dions entered. This is Victor Coligon's car,
pictured in Warsaw with the end almost in sight... Godard, who drove
the other de Dion is see adjusting his camera. Jean Bizac, the de
Dion's riding mechanic is actually working underneath the car in this
shot! |
|
The
6hp, one-cylinder, two-stroke Contal tri-car. Driven by Auguste Pons,
with Octave Foucault as mechanic. Its laden Wright was 700kg. |
|
|
Perhaps
the least suitable car in the 1907 Peking to Paris was the French,
three-wheeled, single-cylinder Contal, driven by Pons, which failed
even to negotiate the first desert crossing |
